The retreat of a hardcoder

Thought I'd code the project website the hard way. For the fun..... turns out it was not so fun. After all, myPal is an application project. Not a web project. So now i have surrendered and obtained Macromedia Dreamweaver. Can't wait to mess around with all the fancy gadgets in the dreamweaver.

Cheers,
O

non-compatible IE

Turns ut that IE6 does not understand the stylesheet I have added. Now that I was satisfied with the layout, I have to do it all over again to enable 90% of the web-browsers out there to read the content properly.

The day Microsoft will make a product that don't suck is the day they start producing vacuum cleaners....

Finally, have released a basic homepage, and leared myself enough about SSH and rsync to upload this. myPal homepage can be viewed here. Now we need a fancy logo

me so n00b

Yarr... I am now working on a page so we have something to present on our project homepage. Turns out that I am quite n00b with Apache server. I needed a directory for documents , so I decided to name this "doc". What I didn't know, was that Apache was configured to redirect all requests from /doc to /usr/share/doc. I actually got full access to this dir. I like to define this as a major security glitch from my side. Have configured Apache do reject remote connections though. This is exactly what I was referring to with the "Microsoft cuddling". Microsoft doesn't do this. Microsoft is like the mother saying "You cant go there. I can't tell why why, but don't go there. It's dangerous".
Nice to know such things before one gets a real job with real responsibilities

Return of the mother

Well, now his mother returned. She explained to him why he could't buy the Pokemon game with 2$, a 1:70 scale toy car and a used pokemon trading card. Now he is crying.... great.... now can you please leave ?
New element of irritation has arrived. A 12 year old kid wants to buy San Andreas. I've said NO 1000 times. He has asked me 1000 times.... He tries to be friendly with me, ugh, even if I was 12 years old again I would have found other friends than that rude brat.

Cheers.

So little time......

Whew, project administration is time consuming. Have the day organizing and preparing the developers for the task to come. Luckily I work at a place with no customers, so I can get this done while I get paid for it :) .

Speaking of job... on my "personal info" page I said I was unemployed. I kinda lied...... I am employed but I dont have any work to do, so it's a matter of personal opinion to define whether I am employed or unemployed. I "work" at a game shop, but the shop has no customers. No paying customers that is. I just show up, spend a couple of hours there, and get paid in the end of the month.

As we speak / As I write / right now <- Fill inn what suits best I am writing on this blog. In front of me there is a kid with a lollipop. He wants to buy a 50$ pokemon game, and he intends to pay this with: 2$, a 1:70 scale toy car and a pokemon trade card. Probably not one of the valuable ones either. CHRIST ! Where is this childs mother ? Should 5/6 year old children walk alone in a mall ? And visit gameshops with suspicious employees ?

Apache and Server Side Includes ( and a bit of Microsoft rant)

Have had a wrestling-match with Apache webserver for two days now. Needed to establish a development server on my local machine. So I needed Apache2, PHP4 and SSI support.
Apache worked right out of the box. PHP4 did not work right out of the box, but after a couple of hurs this worked fine too. I have stopped counting how many hours I have used trying to enable SSI. It makes me depressed. Am using Linux, which means a lack of fancy configuration tools ( Yes, I have seen them available for win32 clients ) .

Nevertheless, I think this is better. Working with Microsoft is like a 40 year old still living with his parents. That person will do fine as long as they are alive, but what happens when they die ? Or when he is forced to move out from home ? The philosophy of M$ is to cuddle with us so much that we make ourselves addicted, and happily throws out almost 200$ for a new operating system ( Windows XP pro Norwegian), 500$ for a decent office-environment ( Office Pro 2003 Norwegian) or 320$ for the ability to make own homepages ( Frontpage 2003 Norwegian).

Well, nuff ranting now. have to emark on the journey of enabling server side includes. Right now I wish I had a fancy graphic configuration tool :)

Developers for the project

Whee. Published some job ads on SourceForge, so the team is growing. Challenge is to find people that will make a good mix.
Busy week ahead now. Must prepare a lot of documentation so I can keep these people occupied.

Introduction

The myPal idea came to me in springtime 2006. My goal was to create an agent that should be able to handle email, calendar and social filesharing. The background for the idea was that I've not seen any complete agents that can handle any of these features. I did't want to create an application where users have to first open the application and then have to navigate through menus to get their job done. The idea of myPal is that it will always be "there" when you need it. Recently SourceForge accepted to host this project, meaning that the project gets access to all the handy features a project admin could wish.

This blog will contain my personal experience and the thoughts i have about the project, and will be written in a quite informal tone. For more information about the project, there exists a project summary page and a project web site. Currently, the project web site is empty, but more information will appear there in a week or so.
